HOT TRAMP, I LOVE YOU SO: A PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION AT A HAUNTED HOLLYWOOD LANDMARK

The historic-and haunted- Chateau La Fontaine, Hollywood, California

Welcome to The Divination Nation blog!

We are Pleasant Gehman and Crystal Ravenwolf, a duo of divination divas, “spiritual sisters from another mister”. We’re life-long Tarotistas, obsessed with all things esoteric and paranormal. Look for our forthcoming book, “Walking The Tarot Path” in 2016.
We’ve created this blog to share our knowledge and to connect with the vibrant worldwide metaphysical and paranormal community. We hope it’s as fun for you to read as it is for us to write…Enjoy!

On the evening of January 10, 2016, we had the opportunity to do our first paranormal investigation of the New Year. Our hunt took place at a Hollywood landmark, the beautiful Chateau La Fontaine… and for the first time ever in many years of doing paranormal investigations, one of us came home with a spirit attachment. We blame this on David Bowie… but more about that later!

Noted architect Leland Bryant designed the historic Chateau La Fontaine in the 1930’s; the building has been home to a number of celebrities- and spirits- in the decades since it was built.  For years, the place has been  acknowledged as being notoriously haunted. A current resident called us to investigate her apartment because there was a lot of paranormal activity going on: whispering, objects moving, and cold spots. She also said that she felt totally “creeped out” when she went to her storage locker in the basement.

The apartment owner and her adult son accompanied us during the hunt. As we worked, the son took photos on his iPhone 6 as per our instructions: take two or three sequential photos of each spot, to see if any anomalies were present in the images. All our equipment was in use during the investigation: we had a  Rempod, K2, EVP recorder and an EMF meter and an Ovilis.
We got lots of hits in the apartment itself … listen to this EVP we took in the hallway, and you can hear whispering:

When we were in the basement, we investigated in a hallway that was very heavy with weird, dark energy. Crystal was in the midst of doing a session with her dowsing rods when she suddenly said,
"I feel like there's someone behind me!"
None of us noticed anything unusual, but the apartment owner’s son snapped these pix on his phone sequentially. Both photos, taken seconds apart, appeared about the same… but look carefully at the second one- there is definitely something behind Crystal, and there was nobody else-or at least no other humans-in that hallway.

The second photo from the Chateau's basement-look at Crystal's left shoulder
Here is the second photo blown up. but otherwise un-retouched or altered. As you can see, something is hovering around Crystal’s left shoulder.

Seriously...What The *BLEEP* is that?  We'd  love for you to comment on this photo!

After more investigating, we finally called it an evening and headed home to Pleasant’s house. We figured we’d smudge each other off and do some energy work- the way we always did after an investigation-before hitting the hay.

But the moment we walked in the door, we heard the news on the radio that David Bowie had died.

Instantaneously, both our phones started blowing up with texts about it. In disbelief, we Googled it, hoping it was a hoax. Soon, we realized it wasn’t. Both us are lifelong hardcore Bowie freaks …we were absolutely devastated. In between bursts of tears and expressions of total denial, we combed the Internet for more news. Finally, we went to bed. The next day, both of us were still very upset, and pretty much useless. The day after, Crystal left to go back to her home in   California’s Central Valley.

The reason we’re giving you this personal post-investigation timeline is because about a week later, we both noticed that things were getting a little cray-cray in our respective houses; in both places, objects were going missing and  electronics were malfunctioning. Oddly, neither of us realized that these phenomena had anything to do with our investigation at the Chateau.

At that point, a friend of Crystal’s teenage daughter casually asked if their house was haunted. The very next day, Crystal, her daughter and daughter’s two friends saw objects literally flying out of cabinets on their own.

Only then did it dawn on us that because of David Bowie’s death, we’d completely forgotten to do our regular post-investigation cleansing rituals!

Luckily, we’re both experienced in banishing negative energy and chasing away “hitchhiking" spirits, so we took care of things immediately. However, we were both horrified that we’d forgotten to protect ourselves after the investigation.
We are both “clean” now, but we want to make sure you stay safe after your investigations, too.

So here are some post-investigation tips:

CLOSE DOWN YOUR INVESTIGATION
You wouldn’t leave a dinner party without saying goodbye, right? Well, you gotta get closure on your paranormal investigations, too. Politely bid adieu to any spirits you encountered but make sure to let them know that under no circumstances are they welcome in your home. Respectfully ask to stay right where they are. Mention that you had a good time interacting with them and thank them, but that they need to stay put, they can’t join you as you leave.

Next, make a circle with your team, discussing plans to check in with each other during the next few days to make sure everyone is fine and that no entities followed them home.  If you were hunting at a private residence, include the humans who live there, too. Cleanse each other with sage, which, by the way should stay in your car during a hunt, because spirits hate it- sage actually repels them!  Take turns smudging each other before you leave the investigation site.  Fan the smoke up and down each other’s bodies, covering everyone thoroughly. If anyone in your group does energy work, have them pull any negativity off the other members.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU GET HOME
Keep a watchful eye open in the hours and days after your investigation. Check for any signs of spirit attachments.  If you’ve brought home a hitchhiker, your energy level, general health and also your emotional wellbeing might be affected. In the week or so after your hunt, if you find yourself feeling under the weather don’t jump to conclusions; rule out the mundane first.   For example, if you’ve got a headache, are you sure you drank enough water during the investigation? And when was the last time you ate a full meal?  If you’ve come down with the sniffles and were hunting outdoors, it could just be hay fever! If you’re lacking energy, again, be sure rule out every day circumstances. For instance, have you been putting in over time at work, or been really busy?  Do a “lifestyle check” just in case.  If you’re condition is worsening, definitely check in with your team to see if anyone else is having similar physical or mental/emotional symptoms.

If things start to seem really off, or if you see any signs of paranormal activity in your house, you need to do a full cleansing, pronto.

We always keep our doors and windowsills salted to deter unwanted spirits, but we’re especially careful about this before going on an investigation.  We sweep up the old salt, dispose of it and replace it with fresh salt.  This ensures that in the event of a “hitchhiker” following us home from a hunt, they won’t be able to get inside our houses.  We also scatter it around the parameters of our yard, and in our cars. No paranormal investigator should ever be without salt!

It’s a good idea in general to cleanse your home about every two weeks. A simple way to cleanse is to light candles and burn sage and candles while asking for positive energy to come into your abode. You might want to add in supplemental cleansing methods based on your spiritual preferences, too. For example, we know people who keep holy water in their houses, some like to have Palo Santo - a type of wood that has spiritual and cleansing effects much like sage- on hand to burn for house purification.

MAKE A CONTINGENCY PLAN
Reach out to your team members  and better yet,  a mentor, psychic medium or healer if you sense that your energy field has been compromised, or feel as though you’ve picked up an attachment on your hunt.  If you are having obvious health problems, be sure to consult a medical doctor, too. Watch for signs of depression, mood swings or anything that could be paranormal activity in your residence. Making sure to protect yourself- before, during and after-a paranormal investigations will allow you to stay healthy mentally, physically and emotionally, plus it’ll enable you to remain committed to doing your paranormal research.

And finally… RIP  David Bowie, we adore  you...

SPIRITUAL CLEANSING FOR THE NEW YEAR

Welcome to The Divination Nation blog!

We are Pleasant Gehman and Crystal Ravenwolf, a duo of divination divas, “spiritual sisters from another mister”. We’re life-long Tarotistas, obsessed with all things esoteric and paranormal. Look for our forthcoming book, “Walking The Tarot Path” in Spring 2016.

We’ve created this blog to share our knowledge and to connect with the vibrant worldwide metaphysical and paranormal community. We hope it’s as fun for you to read as it is for us to write…Enjoy!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Everyone we know is on a cleaning binge for the New Year. Whether you're a little woo woo or not, it’s a tangible way to mark the passing of time, finish one cycle and begin a new one with a clean slate.

We’re both going crazy cleaning and clearing, too… and believe us, that’s something we rarely make time for during the year!  Clearing away “real” clutter will make room for new spiritual energy. As much as we both dread this task, we wash the windows and the floors. We’re particularly anal about cobwebs and dust bunnies, cause we consider them to be like Dream Catchers…but for stagnant energy- and the New Year is all about moving forward.

We’ve both been getting rid of material things we no longer want or use, which will be donated, of course. We also like to re-arrange our altars bydusting off statues, replacing candles, and putting some new talismans out to help set our intentions.

We also get all our divination tools and magick supplies in order, and cleanse them. Crystal favors the Native American way of blowing tobacco smoke over them; your tools can also be charged with crystals or set out  for a moon bath. The first full moon for this year is January 23, 2016. If you live in a place where the weather is generally temperate, you can leave your tools outside; if your area is prone to winter weather, setting them on a windowsill for their moon bath will work just fine.

We particularly believe in airing out the house for the New Year by opening windows to let  all the negative energy out… and bring  new positive energy in. This might be somewhat of a challenge if you don’t live in California like we do, but at least open your windows a crack .for a few minutes.  Follow this by smudging every room the house with sage.

For prosperity, we purge our purses, getting rid of loose change, old receipts, and the various other bits of debris that always seems to accumulate in a chick’s handbag.  Men can do the same with their pockets, wallets or knapsacks. We straighten out and face our paper bills so they’re orderly, and often tuck a small good luck charm into our bags, too.

To attract financial abundance, we both feed our Money Frog statues and burn green candles to attract cash. Pleasant likes to draw a nice fancy number 8 on a piece of paper and tuck it into her billfold.  The number 8 in numerology is all about money ( Liz Taylor was an 8, by the way!) and it’s believed that keeping an 8 in the wallet will attract more cash.  For the same reason, Crystal likes to put a penny in the corners of every room, symbolic of attracting wealth.

For love, warm something sweet on the stove. We favor a mixture of cinnamon and honey, it’ll scent the house with a warm, welcoming, sugary fragrance. Plus, you can put it into your tea and sip if afterwards- it tastes divine.

Bless a bowl of salt (in whatever tradition you follow, or just fill it with nice intention) and toss some around the rooms of your place so unwelcome entities will get the message to vacate the premises.   For more protection from spirits, create a barrier to keep them out of your house by making lines of salt on your doorstep and windowsills.

STAYING SAFE SPIRITUALLY (AND PHYSICALLY) ON PARANORMAL INVESTIGATIONS

Welcome to The Divination Nation blog!
We are Pleasant Gehman and Crystal Ravenwolf, a duo of divination divas, “spiritual sisters from another mister”. We’re life-long Tarotistas, obsessed with all things esoteric and paranormal. We’ve created this blog to share our knowledge and to connect with the vibrant worldwide metaphysical community. Aside from Tarot, we practice many other disciplines, including Reiki, pendulum divining, dousing, crystal work, mediumship, house cleansings, and more. We read for clients, write, lecture and teach together as well as working solo. For years, we’ve worked as professional belly dancers, and since 2009, we’ve been doing paranormal investigations together, exploring public and private sites that are reputed to be haunted.  Currently, we’re working on our book, “ Walking The Tarot Path”.

We’d love for this blog to be relevant for metaphysically-inclined peeps at every stage of development from e beginners to professionals, our posts will range from basic concepts and info that many of you are undoubtedly familiar with, to interviews, how-to’s and reviews on events and products.
We hope this blog is as fun for you to read as it is for us to write…Enjoy!

We live for the dead…or more specifically, we are professional paranormal investigators. We’ve been working as a two-gal team since 2009, and often hunt with others as well. In addition to our own Divination Nation investigations, we’ve done several with Ghost Girls, an all-female Los Angeles-based team with revolving members- many of whom were new to paranormal investigating. Of course, the newbies had several questions. This coming weekend, we’re teaching our workshop “Paranormal Investigation 101”, in California’s Central Valley and we’re certain that those exact same questions will come up in class, so thought we’d share some of our tips for keeping safe both spiritually and physically on ghost hunts.

  HOLD A PRE-INVESTIGATION CIRCLE
Gather the members of your team together in a circle, for a discussion that includes a run-down of protocol.  This should include information on the site you are investigating, including the layout of the site (or building) as well as its history of haunting and what sort of spirits you might potentially encounter.

Go over general troubleshooting, such as making sure everyone knows what to do if they get separated, in case someone gets injured, or feels physically ill. Often, spirits have an affect on humans, who are sensitive to them, which could include-but is not limited to- headaches or bouts of nausea. Making sure everyone is on the same page about these matters will make for a much more efficient- and safe- hunt.

On our investigations, we like to conclude our circle by having everyone hold hands and have a member of the team lead a non-denominational prayer, asking for spiritual protection, and wishing all team members a safe and active hunt.

PERSONAL PROTECTION RITUALS
There are many protection rituals that can be performed before embarking on a paranormal investigation, and they are as unique as the individuals who practice them! In fact, sometimes they might seem as superstitious and downright bizarre as the lucky rituals gamblers practice…but hey, that’s precisely why these are personal. There’s no right or wrong here- as the old saying goes, “If it feels good, do it!”.

Often, people like to carry a talisman or good luck charm with them to ward off evil, so if you need a shiny 1943-penny or your grandma’s rosary beads in your pocket, or must have a rabbit’s foot or skeleton key with you in order to feel spiritually protected, go for it!  Bear in mind that certain stones -crystals especially- will actually absorb both positive and negative energy, so make sure you do your research, cause you certainly don’t want to bring home any bad stuff with you.

Many paranormal investigators like to concentrate on surrounding themselves in a protective bubble of white light. As woo-woo and Grateful Dead Parking Lot-adjacent as that might sound, it’s a terrific idea. If you feel safe and spiritually protected, you probably are. Heck, we do this all the time.  You must be at least somewhat woo-woo to be ghost hunting in the first place, right?  Embrace it- Woo-Woo “R” Us!

PHYSICAL PROTECTION
Your physical well being on a paranormal investigation is definitely not a woo-woo concern, it’s very important. The first rule is: Never Hunt Alone.  You never know what-or who- you might encounter…and speaking from experience, we can truly say that we’re probably more afraid of humans than we are of spirits!

Many of the places you’ll potentially investigate are in remote or abandoned areas, very late at night. Anyone with even the simplest working knowledge of B horror films knows that these are precisely the type of places where some nut in a clown suit or hockey mask is gonna pop out and try to murder you. All kidding aside, there should always be at least two people, more is better. Since we are both women, and often hunt with all-girl teams, we always have a couple of brawny dudes with us to act as security. Although our security team is always terrific for warding off sketchy humans, truth is told, one of them nearly quit on the spot out of sheer terror the first time he heard our Spirit Box go off!

Remember to dress in layers, and wear comfortable, well-fitting sturdy shoes or boots- you never know what you might be walking around on- mud, rotting floor boards, debris strewn floors, uneven steps.

Bring along plenty of water and some protein snacks- many investigations last for hours and you’ll need to keep hydrated and have your energy stay up.   A flashlight is a must, as is a small first aid kit.  If there are several of you and you are splitting up, Walkie-Talkies are also a great thing to have along.  Remember to bring extra batteries- spirits are notorious for draining batteries, not just on your equipment, but also on flashlights. Make sure your cellphone is charged, too.

ASSISTING YOUR TEAM MEMBERS
If someone on your team needs help for any reason, you need to be there for him or her.   As we said earlier, anyone who is sensitive to spirits can become drained of energy, get panicky, headachy or sick to their stomach. These physical reactions are fairly typical, and need to be addressed. Please do not leave anyone alone or unattended if they’re in distress! Humans Before Ghosts, ok?

 AFTER YOUR INVESTIGATION
When you’re done with your investigation, there are many things you can do to make sure you’re not bringing home an unwanted guest, often referred to as a “hitchhiker”.

Circle up with your team again and have a re-cap session, going over what you’ve all experienced and then let the cleansing begin. First of all, you can respectfully ask any spirits you’ve encountered to stay where they are. Mention that you had a good time interacting with them and thank them, but that they need to stay put, they can’t come home with you.

Have some sage in your car, light it up, and take turns smudging each other before you leave your investigation site, lightly fanning the smoke up and down each other’s bodies.   Also, it’s quite important to make sure you don’t have the sage with you on your hunt- burning or not, it will keep spirits away! If anyone on your team can do energy work, they can pull any negativity off the other members.

We like to keep our doors and window sills freshly salted in general, but especially before going on an investigation, so that in case we come home with a hitchhiker, they won’t be able to get into our houses.

If you find yourself feeling a bit under the weather after you’ve gotten home, don’t jump to conclusions: rule out the mundane first. Could it be that your body is aching because you were running around on your feet for seven hours?  Your head hurts…are you sure you drank enough water? When was the last time you ate?  Check with other team members to see if anyone had a cold you could’ve caught, that sort of thing. If you’re feeling sick or just tired in general, monitor your symptoms and see a doctor if necessary.

Stay safe, have fun and Happy Hunting!
