HEALING CRYSTALS 101: A GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

Just a few healing crystals from our...cough-cough...rather extensive collection

Welcome to The Divination Nation blog!
We are Pleasant Gehman and Crystal Ravenwolf, a duo of divination divas, “spiritual sisters from another mister”. We’re life-long Tarotistas, obsessed with all things esoteric and paranormal. Look for our forthcoming book, “Walking The Tarot Path” in late 2016.
We’ve created this blog to share our knowledge and to connect with the vibrant worldwide metaphysical and paranormal community. We hope it’s as fun for you to read as it is for us to write…Enjoy!

Crystals are one of Mother Nature’s most gorgeous masterpieces. For centuries, these beautiful rocks have been used for protection, healing, adornment and decoration in practically every culture known to mankind.

In the past forty or so years, since the dawn of the New Age movement, healing crystals morphed from being a “woo woo” obsession into mainstream Western culture.  People all over the world are interested in these amazing rocks and their properties, but many aren’t quite sure how to use them, select them for their unique properties, or even where to find quality crystals and what to spend on them.

Pretty much anyone can use crystals to enhance their life, even without a lot of knowledge on the subject- though we heartily encourage you to do some research and find out as much as possible. The Internet is always a good source, but make sure you don’t rely on just one site to gain your knowledge. Even if you are a newbie, crystals can enhance your life. They be carried with you as a talisman, worn as jewelry, be added to an altar, or just be displayed around your home. The vibrational energy put out by crystals can have an effect on you any of these ways. There are several more advanced ways of using crystals as well, such as to aid in meditation, to enhance intuition and psychic perception, for aligning the chakras, or to promote physical healing. Crystals can also be used on a grid, which is a distinctive grouping of stones, all chosen for their specific properties.  The concept is that each stone amplifies and works in tandem with each other’s exceptional qualities to manifest intentions and goals. But let’s concentrate on the basics first!

To begin with, every stone gives off its own unique form of subtle energy.  Its structure, and the vibrations that are specific to the crystal itself define this. Each crystal- including most of the stones attributed to be healing crystals- emanate energy in a way that strengthens particular qualities within us. As a beginner, it might take some time to notice these affects, but you will soon be able to sense them.
Where you find crystals for purchase is up to you, though a good place to start would be your local metaphysical shop, where you can also get advice on the healing properties of each type of crystal.  There are always several kinds for sale at rock and gem shows, though the dealers may be more “rock hound” or collector oriented, and not always up on the metaphysical uses of the crystals. What you spend on them is also a matter of personal or financial taste, too. Depending on the variety, rarity, and size or type of each crystal, you could spend anywhere from a couple of bucks to a few hundred-or thousand- dollars!  For instance, a small piece of rose quartz might be $2.99, whereas a   good-sized chunk of malachite might be $60.00, and a humongous amethyst geode might run you three grand! If you were an absolute beginner, it would probably behoove you to pick out a few smaller specimens and see how you like them.

When selecting your crystals, remember that you should pick out according to your own taste and first impression. If you are drawn to a particular stone visually, hold it in your hand try to feel it’s vibration- chances are, even if you aren’t used to sensing this, your intuition will tell you if that crystal is right for you.  If you’re buying it to carry, you might want to also pick up a small pouch to carry it in.  If you want to place in your home, you don’t need any specific accouterment- it’s fine on it’s own, on a table, bookshelf, your desk; displayed on its own or even in a bowl with other crystals. If you’re considering a piece of crystal jewelry, make sure to try it on and determine if you notice a change in the way you feel when wearing it on your body.

Once you acquire your crystals, there are ways to attune and re-charge their energy.  It’s always a good idea to cleanse your crystals when you first get them, and to do this periodically in general. Many people like to sage their crystals before keeping the crystal on their person or under their pillow for a few days to attune the stone to their own energetic vibration.  Legions of crystal aficionados like to give their stones a “moon bath” by laying them on a windowsill (or outside) so the crystals can absorb the light of a full moon. Some cleanse their crystals by burying them in a bowl or rice or salt to absorb any energy- especially negative- that the stone may have absorbed. Some crystals, like citrine and black kyantite are believed to be so pure and high vibrational that they simply do not absorb negative energy of any kind.

Here are some of our top picks for “starter” crystals, in alphabetical order:

Amethyst is a calming, stone that enhances creativity and intuition, promotes stress relief, heals headaches and back pain. It boosts the metabolism, soothes grief and aids in mental clarity.

Black Kyanite is great for grounding, helping with memory issues and accessing the imagination and intuition.  It is a stone of protection, communication and can inspire loyalty. According to a friend of ours, it actually mends holes in auras. This stone brings a calming, tranquilizing energy to the human body, and assists in receiving intuitive and psychic thoughts, as well as dream recall. Black Kyanite is often used by energy healers because of its highly restorative properties.

Clear Quartz We call this the “Type O” or most “universal” of crystals. Clear Quartz directs and amplifies energy by energizing other crystals. It can be used for protection and   promotes balanced energy, mental concentration, and psychic vision.

Citrine is known as a lucky crystal that brings abundance, prosperity, generosity, and hope, it’s used to help to surmount emotional trauma, diabetes, and can be a great healing stone for fibromyalgia. Like Black Kyanite, Citrine is exceptional because it simply doesn’t absorb negative energy.

Hematite balances and unites the mind, body and spirit. Its shiny surface repels negativity and promotes inner vision and intuition, so it is a favorite among psychics. Hematite is good for stress and anxiety reduction and can also relieve insomnia.

Lapis Lazuli
Worn frequently as protective jewelry by the ancient Egyptians for protection, Lapis Lazuli can improve memory, increase creativity and the imagination. Some of its attributes include lowering blood pressure, increasing circulation, and aiding in heart health.  This is also a crystal that deepens friendship, and good will, helping relationships to become more harmonious.  It’s associated with mental acumen and truth.

Moonstone Every chick needs a moonstone! This luminous gem not only looks amazing when worn as jewelry, it is all about love and nurture. It enhances maternal instincts, helps with pregnancy and childbirth, and can balance hormonal fluctuations and help with menstrual pain.

Rose Quartz is another crystal that no gal should be without. This beautiful stone has a very soothing and highly feminine vibration. It’s great for finding lasting love, and promotes compassion, empathy, and tolerance. Rose Quartz also enhances intuition and can raise self-esteem.

Try some-or all -of these incredibly beneficial  gemstones out and see how they can change your life in a positive way. Oh, and one last thing... crystals can be highly addictive...don't say we didn't tell you!

SEERS AND SAGES: INTERVIEW WITH KITTY JANUSZ OF INTO THE LIGHT PARANORMAL

Kitty Janusz during a paranormal investigation on board the RMS Queen Mary

Welcome to The Divination Nation blog!

We are Pleasant Gehman and Crystal Ravenwolf, a duo of divination divas, “spiritual sisters from another mister”. We’re life-long Tarotistas, obsessed with all things esoteric and paranormal. Look for our forthcoming book, “Walking The Tarot Path” in August 2016.

We’ve created this blog to share our knowledge and to connect with the vibrant worldwide metaphysical and paranormal community. We hope it’s as fun for you to read as it is for us to write…Enjoy!

Kitty Janusz is one mighty metaphysician.  She’s the founder of Into The Light Paranormal, and in addition to conducting paranormal investigations, she’s a psychic medium, hypnotherapist, Reiki master…and master blogger. She also hosts a weekly radio show, interviewing a plethora of interesting, on the fringe guests, including cryptozoologists, historians, mediums, healers and authors.  Speaking of writing, Kitty’s recent book chronicling her lifetime of ghost hunting When The Dead Speak:  The Art & Science of Paranormal Investigation, has (deservedly) earned the coveted five stars on Amazon.com, and just won  first prize in it's category at the Los Angeles Festival Of Books.

Kitty grew up in a haunted house in the Los Angeles suburb of Whittier, where she still resides.  Her supernatural experiences as a child colored her irrevocably; guiding her incredible career and the life she leads now- with friends on both sides of the veil. Kitty illuminates her varied experiences- and some tips for conducting successful paranormal investigations here:

Divination Nation: You’ve had several paranormal experiences your entire life… when and how did you   start communicating with spirits?  Did you have a mentor, or just start doing it yourself? Can you tell us about some early encounters?

Kitty Janusz: I grew up in what would now be considered a very paranormally active home.  My brother and sister and I knew that this resident spirit meant no harm and it was considered just another member of the household. At that time, we didn’t really know there was a way to communicate with spirits so we just enjoyed his antics of blowing curtains in rooms with closed windows, footsteps and always finding objects that have been moved to peculiar places. We could feel the static electricity in spots-our hallway always gave me the creeps! I have to say the only time I directly communicated with this spirit is when it frightened me, although I believe it was probably unintentional. I was about 7 years old. I had just climbed into bed and closed my eyes when I felt something hop on the corner of the bed. Now we always had several cats with us growing up and of course they wanted to sleep in the bed…but this didn’t feel like a cat...the pressure kept sinking the bed’s corner down. I snapped my eyes open and bolted upright. Indeed, the bed’s corner had “ someone” sitting on it! It was just a bit too close for comfort and I shouted, “Stop that!” Immediately, the pressure was gone. It never did it again. Other than that one too close for comfort episode with me, we just figured everybody had a ghost in his or her house and it was no big deal. Years passed and this spirit went on his merry way.

As an adult I love old historic locations and a favorite playground is the RMS Queen Mary. I’d heard the stories growing up that she was haunted and I thought. “Well, we’ll see what we can find.” I was attending a conference aboard and during a break I went to the lower deck that holds the Infirmary Ward. I had a trusty little digital recorder with me and started a short EVP session. My first one, I asked, “Can you tell me what year it is?” I had to get back to the conference. Later in the hotel room, I played it back, holding the recorder up to my ear… “Can you tell me what year it is?” I heard a raspy whisper.. 1943! I squealed! I was hooked!

My first real investigation I was so excited to be in these places in the wee hours when no one else is there that I don’t remember what  evidence we captured. What I do remember is we were standing in the pitch black cargo hold of the Queen Mary. It’s so dangerous that it is now closed off even to employees. You could only access it by climbing down these steep, rusty stairs. There was a bulkhead door that opened up to about a thirty foot drop! This is an area reported to have held POWs during her wartime service. My sister was having tummy issues that night. Suddenly, the group heard a low, growling rumble! Well I knew it was my sister but my sister was too mortified to confess and grabbed my arm and pleaded with me to say nothing. Before I knew it everyone thought they were having communication with this growling spirit. “It sounded like it was saying “Help me” “I think it was a demon” “No. I heard a little girl’s voice” it spiraled out of control and at that point I knew investigators are quick to believe any noise they hear is something paranormal, I could feel the heat of my sister blushing from embarrassment as she stood in the corner in the dark. Even today I find investigators are just sure they see Aunt Mabel in an orb and think every thump is a ghost. I admit sometimes I find myself trying to justify a shadow as something paranormal because I really want something to be there. It’s hard to admit sometimes you come away with nothing other than an experience in a creepy location.

Divination Nation: Did you have a mentor, or just start doing investigations by yourself?

Kitty Janusz: love the books by Jeff Belanger and I highly recommend attending any paranormal lectures in your area. Dave Schrader of Darkness Radio is a great guy and funny as hell. I did lose two good friends this year, Mark & Debby Constantino. They taught me so much about capturing EVPs. They will be truly missed.

DN: How do you prepare prepare mentally, emotionally, physically for your investigations now? And what do you do to stay safe spiritually?

KJ: I believe it’s a sorely overlooked aspect of paranormal investigations. Investigating the paranormal deals heavily in measuring energy and fluctuations in the electromagnetic fields. We are one of the best tools in our arsenal for detecting such fluctuations. Your hair standing up, feeling that static electricity in the air, even feelings of sudden pain, sadness, or nausea may be signs of spirit either transferring their emotions or trauma in an effort to communicate. It is imperative that we set boundaries as to how close these energetic influences can come in and affect us. It a choice on our part to have spirit enter us or to say, “You know, I feel your pain, please stand next to me and we can have this conversation side by side.” I don’t feel it’s safe to allow spirits to channel through me completely. I prefer to have a discussion and maintain control. There are a lot of opportunists out there in the metaphysical. Be careful.

As for mental and emotional preparation, I am going there to connect with spirit. I am going to a location to communicate, offer solace and healing, and if need be, help them find their way to the Light. If I know a particular location has a negative entity, I prepare by doing a short meditation. I envision wrapping myself in a golden light, shooting through my head and shooting through my feet into the earth to ground myself. This accomplishes two things. One, I am visualizing my personal boundaries and thus, “Owning my space.”  This also puts me in touch with my chakras and become aware of any vulnerability ahead of time and I can fix it right there. It may sound woo woo but being present and aware of your own energy is what keeps you connected and protected. Two, by coming into a location visualizing yourself as a golden rod of pure light, it sends that message out to the Universe and it is very effective at keeping negative entities at bay. Where there is light, darkness cannot exist.

DN: Tell us about your book.

KJ: I was actually laid up after surgery and a friend suggested I write a book to fill my time. I came at this book with the idea that there are two schools of thought on connecting with spirit. The first is the scientific method. The scientific reasoning on how, why, and when paranormal phenomena occurs. I discuss how Quantum theory and the metaphysical are intertwining together and explain the popular theories such as Water memory and Stone Tape theories. These theories try to explain how energetic imprints may become imbedded in locations with a tragic or emotional past. But scientific theories are only part of the equation. Paranormal phenomena is almost impossible to replicate in a lab setting. It’s more of a field research. I also think it’s important in showing the reader that everyone has intuitive abilities. I share ways to tune these abilities and interpret what you feel when you’re investigating. Using all these tools at your disposal will make you an ethical, credible, paranormal investigator.

DN: You wear many hats; how do you divide your attention between paranormal investigations, your work as a medium, your radio show, your blog, and everything else you do?  Does it all seem like one big inter-connected thing, or…?

 KJ:  I don’t sleep much!
Kidding aside, I do have a regular job that I go to everyday.  Looking for potential guests, I just seek out people that interest me! I think if you are truly interested in what your guest does, the conversation just flows. One of my favorite interviews was with a taxidermist from the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History. Allis Markham looks like Betty Page and is taking the world of taxidermy by storm. I was so excited to talk about taxidermy and how it’s such an art (it’s not gross!) that the whole interview was more like two girls gossiping on a Saturday night than a radio interview! It was so much fun.
When a client books a mediumship reading, I prefer to actually do the reading alone, in quiet. I need to get into that meditative state to clear my mind to allow spirit to come through. I find it easier to connect with spirit and call the client afterwards and I answer any questions. I believe meditation is a great tool in training your brain and body to channel and focus. Yeah, but I don’t get enough sleep though! Ha!

DN: Tell us about your most significant- or moving- experiences both as a medium and as a paranormal investigator.

One of my favorite readings was for a young mother who had lost a child. I kept getting these visions of weird bugs flying around the mother. They looked artificial, like drawings. I didn’t want to say I saw flies around her so I said, “What’s with the bees? I keep seeing bees or strange bugs around you.” This is where the clairecognizence, or the sense of knowing, comes into play. Something just kept telling me her dead son was sending these bugs to her. “He’s telling me he’s sending you these bugs. Are you seeing bugs in strange places? They look like little drawings of bugs.” The mom burst into tears. “My dead son always would draw little bugs! “ “But he keeps telling me he’s bringing them to you now.” “OMG! My living son has recently started drawing the same kind of bugs! How could you know that!” It was a very sweet message from a little boy to show his mom he’s OK.

Also, I’m partial to the Queen Mary. While doing an investigation in the Pool Room, we had lengthy K2 session with “Jackie” a spirit who represents herself as a child spirit. Whoever this little spirit is, she’s quite the show boater, signing audibly, and answering our endless questions. However, when she becomes tired, she lets you know. She loves giving hugs. All of us present could feel a cool breeze caress us from one side and around the other, first one person, then the next. It was such a moving experience because it was so sweet and touching.

DN: What’s your favorite piece of equipment to use in investigations, and why?

KJ: I am partial to digital recorders. I find I get good quality EVPs at almost every location. There are more high tech models out there but I prefer the Olympus pc4100. Newer ones have many internal filters. It’s what worked for me and I stand by my evidence. I toss out anything that might be questionable or any I have to “clean up” too much to sound plausible. Many prefer photographic evidence but your eyes try so hard to make patterns out of shapes. I’m just not really an orb person.

DN: Would you please share some of your top tips and advice on conducting paranormal investigations for our readers?

KJ: Be respectful of space and spirit. Many of these souls died tragic deaths and may still be lost or terrified. Don’t taunt or provoke in the name of evidence. Think of them as a family member. Would you want someone shouting commands at your crying little sister?

Be respectful of space. Are you in someone’s home? Be mindful of the family’s plight and remember you are there to help first and foremost. Are you in a historic location? Treat it like the museum it is.

Visit locations many times. They remember you and your attitude! If you cross spirit over, I believe it invites more to come, as they see you as someone who can help. Be a jerk and taunt and provoke, and the energy will reflect your attitude.
Your favorite piece of equipment will yield good results the more you use it. I believe it becomes some sort of energetic bond.

Love what you do and do it with the intention of learning something everyday.

OSTARA, EASTER AND THE MAGIC OF SPRING EQUINOX

We loooove Botticelli...almost as much as we love Springtime!

Welcome to The Divination Nation blog!

We are Pleasant Gehman and Crystal Ravenwolf, a duo of divination divas, “spiritual sisters from another mister”. We’re life-long Tarotistas, obsessed with all things esoteric and paranormal. Look for our forthcoming book, “Walking The Tarot Path” in 2016.

We’ve created this blog to share our knowledge and to connect with the vibrant worldwide metaphysical and paranormal community. We hope it’s as fun for you to read as it is for us to write…Enjoy!

Today, March 20, 2016 marks the first day of spring, as the Equinox equality light and darkness before the sun begins to dominate and we glide into summer. This is always such a magickal time of year; the earth awakens and we’re all feeling change in the air. Splashes of color explode as flowers and trees bloom. Animals – except for the Groundhog, who was rudely awakened by humans on February second-come out of hibernation. Life is all around as we approach one of the four Sabbaths celebrated by Pagans throughout the Northern Hemisphere; the Spring Equinox also known as the Vernal Equinox.
Every region and religion on earth celebrate this time of fertility and childish wonder with different traditions. . For Christians, Easter is celebrated the first Sunday following the Equinox’s full moon, representing the resurrection of Christ. The ancient Greeks celebrated Persephone’s return from the Underworld, which brought the promise of her mother, Demeter granting the growth of crops to feed the people.  To this day, Persians celebrate their New Year, Nawruz, or New Day.
Neopagans celebrate Ostara; the name derived Eostre, the Saxon fertility goddess who brought forth Spring. Little is written about her, but one myth suggests she found a bird whose wings were frozen from the winters cold. Eostre fell in love with the bird, healing him by turning him into a rabbit that could lay beautiful colored eggs that were given to the children at the Spring Festivals.
Apparently, ancient Druids would bury eggs in freshly plowed fields to insure bounty at harvest time.  The eggs were painted red – symbolic of menstrual blood- because it was believed that would draw more life force into the earth itself.  But whether they were colored or not, eggs have always been associated with springtime rituals. Ancient Romans, Gauls, Egyptians and the Chinese saw eggs as a symbol of the promise within our universe.
Instead of smearing  human bodily fluids on eggs, most of us celebrate this abundant time of year by gorging on chocolate bunnies and the myriad flavors of Marshmallow Peeps available at Target. Though neo Pagan celebrations are  a teensy bit more magickal, they're just as fun and goodie-filled....and we definitely do not use any sort of...uh...biohazard to paint our eggs!

During the return of spring, our deities are all in their youthful form. In Crystal’s family, the children would hunt not only for the colored eggs but also for a hidden altar filled with prizes. The kiddies exchanged the numbered eggs they collected for whatever prize on the altar had the matching number. This taught them at an early age to make offerings for blessings.
No matter what your faith, this is also a terrific time of year to ‘plant’ your intent for whatever you would like to accomplish in the coming months. Scatter seeds in a decorative pot, focusing on your goals during the process. As you nurture the young shoots with water, focus on your goals growing as the seedlings do.
However you celebrate the Equinox- and Spring in general- revel in the rebirth and the dawning of Summer's promised potential. Let this time of year refill your cup and make your spirit soar with hope.

THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING A TAROT JOURNAL

Welcome to The Divination Nation blog!

We are Pleasant Gehman and Crystal Ravenwolf, a duo of divination divas, “spiritual sisters from another mister”. We’re life-long Tarotistas, obsessed with all things esoteric and paranormal. Look for our forthcoming book, “Walking The Tarot Path” in April 2016.

We’ve created this blog to share our knowledge and to connect with the vibrant worldwide metaphysical  and paranormal community. We hope it’s as fun for you to read as it is for us to write…Enjoy!

There are several reasons to keep a Tarot journal…but the most significant one is that it will make you a better reader.  No matter what level you’re on, the process of journaling is illuminating. If you’re a student, it helps you become acquainted with the cards. For longtime practitioners and professionals, the connection to each card deepens. Keeping written notes will assist you in tracking your own progress. A written record of your readings- whether for yourself, friends or clients- allows you to look back, seeing how the various situations the cards showed you played out.

Another benefit of keeping a journal is expedited learning through your own personal experiences. If you’ve been devouring every book on Tarot you can get your hot little hands on, undoubtedly your mind has absorbed the key words and phases for each card. However, those interpretations – no matter how academic or correct- are the opinions of others. Keeping a journal practically forces you to formulate your own ideas. You’re our feelings and intuition provides guidance-and ultimately, knowledge- while you handle, relate to and write about the cards… and that is precisely where you will grow as a reader.

We always advise our students to keep a workbook or journal; as far as we’re concerned, it’s mandatory! It doesn’t matter how to keep your journal- some prefer an old-school style- they keep a special book and make notes by hand, including photos of their spreads with notes on the positions of the cards, photocopies of individual cards, or images that remind them of certain cards. Others keep their journal electronically. The preference is yours. Remember, this is for you.

Often, newer readers or even those who haven’t studied this way previously are unsure of what to include in their Tarot journals.  Really, there are no hard and fast rules. Remember, this is for you.

Here are  some Tarot journal ideas we like:

Explore Each Card Fully
Shuffle your deck and randomly pull a card, same as you would for a one-card reading. Instead of applying key words and phrases- and without looking up the card’s meaning if you’re not sure of it, - simply observe the card.  Explore everything- notice every little detail, and your emotional responses to it.   Every card has correlations with numerology, astrology and the Kabbalah.   The suits of the Minor Arcana each relate to an element.  Explore all of these connections.

What catches your eye first- is it the imagery, the colors used, the numeral on the card face? How does the card make you feel? Can you relate to it? Do you like or dislike it? Why?

If you own a few decks, draw the same card from a different and compare the images. What makes them similar or different?   Do you relate to the image in the same way as you did the first version of the same card? If you only own a single deck, you can still contrast cards- download some images from the Internet and do your comparisons that way. Take notes on everything you’ve noticed about each particular card in your journal. Remember, each card has it’s own correlations with numerology, astrology and the Kabbalah, too. The suits of the Minor Arcana each relate to an element.  Explore all of these connections.

With seventy-eight cards, there’s no way you’re going to get bored, because this exercise on it’s own could practically fill an entire book!

Keep Records Of Your Readings…And Your Thoughts
It doesn’t matter if you’ve pulled a single card pull or done an elaborate layout, jot down some notes on the reading itself. Begin with date and time, the name of the person you read for, and the cards that turned up.  If you keep a journal on your phone or computer, snap a photo and label it with pertinent info. For a hard copy diary, just write down the cards and their positions or if you want to get fancy, draw a little picture of the layout.

It’s important to mention the way felt about the reading. Write about your own feelings, or the client’s. Take note if the reading went well, or if it was tricky- maybe some of the cards pulled didn’t seem to make sense, or your sitter didn’t react to them well. You can also “rate” yourself on the way you delivered the reading verbally, if all the questions asked were answered, or if you (or the person you read for) has certain cards showing up over and over.

For spreads that involve a number of cards, such as the Celtic Cross, another good thing to make notations on is the number of Major Arcana cards, and the dominant suit- both of those are important for future reference.

Write About Your Most-And Least-Favorite Cards
Do certain cards really resonate with you? Does The Star feel like it’s “your” card, do you emulate The High Priestess or get the Warm Fuzzies every time you see the Six Of Cups?  Write about the cards you love…and why you love them.

It’s also important to explore the cards you don’t like as much. There are certain cards that may be a bit off-putting to the general public, like Death Or The Devil. As readers, we understand early on that essentially, there is no “good” or “bad” cards- they all have both qualities…and we spend ages trying to educate our students and clients on that, too!

However, there probably are some cards that you personally don’t like as much as the others, for whatever reason. For example, both of us are not really down with The Hierophant, he just…kinda works our nerves. Somebody else might dislike the Three Of Swords, the Five Of Pentacles or one of the Knights. It’s all subjective. If you aren’t “that into” a card, all the more reason to explore the reasons why. By journaling about it, you might feel a new connection to it…or realize that the qualities the card hit a little close to home.  It could be that the card signifies something that’s lacking-or needed- in your life.

Write About Cards That Represent People In Your Life
Go through your deck and pick out a few cards that most represent the significant people you know, such as family members, a best friend, your boss, and so on.  If your first crush was like The Magician, your sister is a total Queen Of Wands, you have a pal who’s really Eight Of Swords-like or the Two Of Cups describes your relationship with your cat, write about it!

Review A Reading You Get From A Professional
It’s always a good idea to get readings from others- no matter what level they’re at.  Other readers can often pick up on things you can’t; they’re also able to be a bit more objective than you are when you read for yourself.

But getting a reading from a seasoned professional, someone you respect is always illuminating. It will be a good experience for you’re personally, but it can also inform you intellectually, and help you to grow as a reader. If you can make a recording of the reading, definitely do that. But even if you can’t, there are several things to appreciate.

Watch (and write about) the way the reader handles the cards, what spread is used, and how much time they take to absorb the card’s meanings before they start speaking. Listen to the tone and delivery  of the reader’s voice- is it soothing? How do they discuss “tricky” cards with you? Does the reader offer counsel or do they just tell you bluntly what each card means?  Did they answer any questions you had? How would you rate your overall experience?  Would you get another reading from this person?

By dissecting your reading, you can learn a lot about yourself, but also about speaking to and relating  to a sitter during a reading that you do.

Trust us: you don’t need to work with your cards and write in your journal every day… but if you want to master the Tarot, you will.

HOT TRAMP, I LOVE YOU SO: A PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION AT A HAUNTED HOLLYWOOD LANDMARK

The historic-and haunted- Chateau La Fontaine, Hollywood, California

Welcome to The Divination Nation blog!

We are Pleasant Gehman and Crystal Ravenwolf, a duo of divination divas, “spiritual sisters from another mister”. We’re life-long Tarotistas, obsessed with all things esoteric and paranormal. Look for our forthcoming book, “Walking The Tarot Path” in 2016.
We’ve created this blog to share our knowledge and to connect with the vibrant worldwide metaphysical and paranormal community. We hope it’s as fun for you to read as it is for us to write…Enjoy!

On the evening of January 10, 2016, we had the opportunity to do our first paranormal investigation of the New Year. Our hunt took place at a Hollywood landmark, the beautiful Chateau La Fontaine… and for the first time ever in many years of doing paranormal investigations, one of us came home with a spirit attachment. We blame this on David Bowie… but more about that later!

Noted architect Leland Bryant designed the historic Chateau La Fontaine in the 1930’s; the building has been home to a number of celebrities- and spirits- in the decades since it was built.  For years, the place has been  acknowledged as being notoriously haunted. A current resident called us to investigate her apartment because there was a lot of paranormal activity going on: whispering, objects moving, and cold spots. She also said that she felt totally “creeped out” when she went to her storage locker in the basement.

The apartment owner and her adult son accompanied us during the hunt. As we worked, the son took photos on his iPhone 6 as per our instructions: take two or three sequential photos of each spot, to see if any anomalies were present in the images. All our equipment was in use during the investigation: we had a  Rempod, K2, EVP recorder and an EMF meter and an Ovilis.
We got lots of hits in the apartment itself … listen to this EVP we took in the hallway, and you can hear whispering:

When we were in the basement, we investigated in a hallway that was very heavy with weird, dark energy. Crystal was in the midst of doing a session with her dowsing rods when she suddenly said,
"I feel like there's someone behind me!"
None of us noticed anything unusual, but the apartment owner’s son snapped these pix on his phone sequentially. Both photos, taken seconds apart, appeared about the same… but look carefully at the second one- there is definitely something behind Crystal, and there was nobody else-or at least no other humans-in that hallway.

The second photo from the Chateau's basement-look at Crystal's left shoulder
Here is the second photo blown up. but otherwise un-retouched or altered. As you can see, something is hovering around Crystal’s left shoulder.

Seriously...What The *BLEEP* is that?  We'd  love for you to comment on this photo!

After more investigating, we finally called it an evening and headed home to Pleasant’s house. We figured we’d smudge each other off and do some energy work- the way we always did after an investigation-before hitting the hay.

But the moment we walked in the door, we heard the news on the radio that David Bowie had died.

Instantaneously, both our phones started blowing up with texts about it. In disbelief, we Googled it, hoping it was a hoax. Soon, we realized it wasn’t. Both us are lifelong hardcore Bowie freaks …we were absolutely devastated. In between bursts of tears and expressions of total denial, we combed the Internet for more news. Finally, we went to bed. The next day, both of us were still very upset, and pretty much useless. The day after, Crystal left to go back to her home in   California’s Central Valley.

The reason we’re giving you this personal post-investigation timeline is because about a week later, we both noticed that things were getting a little cray-cray in our respective houses; in both places, objects were going missing and  electronics were malfunctioning. Oddly, neither of us realized that these phenomena had anything to do with our investigation at the Chateau.

At that point, a friend of Crystal’s teenage daughter casually asked if their house was haunted. The very next day, Crystal, her daughter and daughter’s two friends saw objects literally flying out of cabinets on their own.

Only then did it dawn on us that because of David Bowie’s death, we’d completely forgotten to do our regular post-investigation cleansing rituals!

Luckily, we’re both experienced in banishing negative energy and chasing away “hitchhiking" spirits, so we took care of things immediately. However, we were both horrified that we’d forgotten to protect ourselves after the investigation.
We are both “clean” now, but we want to make sure you stay safe after your investigations, too.

So here are some post-investigation tips:

CLOSE DOWN YOUR INVESTIGATION
You wouldn’t leave a dinner party without saying goodbye, right? Well, you gotta get closure on your paranormal investigations, too. Politely bid adieu to any spirits you encountered but make sure to let them know that under no circumstances are they welcome in your home. Respectfully ask to stay right where they are. Mention that you had a good time interacting with them and thank them, but that they need to stay put, they can’t join you as you leave.

Next, make a circle with your team, discussing plans to check in with each other during the next few days to make sure everyone is fine and that no entities followed them home.  If you were hunting at a private residence, include the humans who live there, too. Cleanse each other with sage, which, by the way should stay in your car during a hunt, because spirits hate it- sage actually repels them!  Take turns smudging each other before you leave the investigation site.  Fan the smoke up and down each other’s bodies, covering everyone thoroughly. If anyone in your group does energy work, have them pull any negativity off the other members.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU GET HOME
Keep a watchful eye open in the hours and days after your investigation. Check for any signs of spirit attachments.  If you’ve brought home a hitchhiker, your energy level, general health and also your emotional wellbeing might be affected. In the week or so after your hunt, if you find yourself feeling under the weather don’t jump to conclusions; rule out the mundane first.   For example, if you’ve got a headache, are you sure you drank enough water during the investigation? And when was the last time you ate a full meal?  If you’ve come down with the sniffles and were hunting outdoors, it could just be hay fever! If you’re lacking energy, again, be sure rule out every day circumstances. For instance, have you been putting in over time at work, or been really busy?  Do a “lifestyle check” just in case.  If you’re condition is worsening, definitely check in with your team to see if anyone else is having similar physical or mental/emotional symptoms.

If things start to seem really off, or if you see any signs of paranormal activity in your house, you need to do a full cleansing, pronto.

We always keep our doors and windowsills salted to deter unwanted spirits, but we’re especially careful about this before going on an investigation.  We sweep up the old salt, dispose of it and replace it with fresh salt.  This ensures that in the event of a “hitchhiker” following us home from a hunt, they won’t be able to get inside our houses.  We also scatter it around the parameters of our yard, and in our cars. No paranormal investigator should ever be without salt!

It’s a good idea in general to cleanse your home about every two weeks. A simple way to cleanse is to light candles and burn sage and candles while asking for positive energy to come into your abode. You might want to add in supplemental cleansing methods based on your spiritual preferences, too. For example, we know people who keep holy water in their houses, some like to have Palo Santo - a type of wood that has spiritual and cleansing effects much like sage- on hand to burn for house purification.

MAKE A CONTINGENCY PLAN
Reach out to your team members  and better yet,  a mentor, psychic medium or healer if you sense that your energy field has been compromised, or feel as though you’ve picked up an attachment on your hunt.  If you are having obvious health problems, be sure to consult a medical doctor, too. Watch for signs of depression, mood swings or anything that could be paranormal activity in your residence. Making sure to protect yourself- before, during and after-a paranormal investigations will allow you to stay healthy mentally, physically and emotionally, plus it’ll enable you to remain committed to doing your paranormal research.

And finally… RIP  David Bowie, we adore  you...
